In our exploration of Southern African sculpture we decided to create african head sculptures. This project was based on the Lyndenburg head dated around 500 AD. This sculpture is one of 7 fired earthenware heads that were found carefully buried in a pit outside of Lyndenburg, they are the earliest known cases of sculpture in southern Africa. The heads are hollow with thin strips and spheres of clay added to create facial features. It is in honour of these heads that we created ours.
