Shield with depressed rectangle design
Shields, spears and knobkerries were used by many African tribes (the Nguni tribes) as a means of protection and ritual. Now these remain in use for symbolic and ceremonial purposes. We chose to celebrate this tradition by immortalising african patterns in our clay shields. These shields use bold lines, incisions, and patterns, utilising many clay skills such as using slip, scratching, sponge cleaning, and marking. We used objects such as seeds and pieces of wood and metal to create these awesome indents.
