Facilitating a natural little artist. Join our art classes now and watch your little one blossom into a budding artist!
Children have numerous creative and entertaining ways of keeping themselves busy. Art is by far one of the most interesting activities for children. However, kids’ art doesn’t just have to be a hobby. If you put a little effort into it, you can encourage your children to develop their drawing, painting and skills in other mediums, which will help develop their creativity as well as their social skills. Our Children’s Art Classes can help children express themselves, become more organised and communicate better. Furthermore, creating art can even help with a child’s brain development.
For more advantages on why children need to do art and join art classes read our article, Raise Smart Kids – let them do art!
Please be aware that these classes are not Arts & Craft Classes. Your child will not be sticking down mosaic tiles and cutting up ribbons (except when creating a mixed media piece!). Whilst those activities are great for recreation and art therapy and for our toddlers learning fine motor skills, our Children’s Art Classes are focused on teaching children how to use different mediums to communicate visually. For this purpose, we teach them the foundations in drawing, painting, clay, printmaking and mixed media.
Teaching the fundamentals
When you learn to draw, to paint, to create a print, clay or mixed media piece you need to learn how to handle the tools of an artist and how to see. The latter is every bit as important as the former. As an artist, you need to look for and seek understanding of what you see. You must be trained to observe accurately using the 7 elements of art:
- Line
- Shape
- Form
- Space
- Texture
- Value
- Colour
Read more on the 7 elements here
These things must be in the artist’s mind before he/she even starts to record what he/she sees, then he can interpret the forms and shapes before him/her in terms of the medium he/she intends to use – clay, pencil, pen, paint, etc.
FAQ – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I sign up my child?
- Book Online and email proof of payment to hello@lilliangray.co.za
- Select an appropriate time slot for your child
- Make payment
What do we need for our first lesson?
Nothing – all art materials are included. I know, great right? Yes, we are also parents and want to remove the drag of driving around for supplies from you.
From which age do you teach?
The best age to start is from age 6 onwards. However, by 7 years old your child would have developed the motor skills required to write. This allows them to progress with the fundamentals of art rapidly. This being said we have often assisted children to develop these skills through art.
What is the structure of the children’s art classes?
We have various teachers that will be teaching the children. To view, our talented crew read more here.
Once a month the children will have one lesson focused on Pottery, one focused on painting, one focused on Drawing and another focused on Printmaking.
This allows the kids to develop holistic, 2D and perception with Drawing, 3D thinking and tactile skills with Clay, planning and working towards a goal with Projects and Painting Skills.
Am I allowed to sit in on children’s art classes?
We regret that we do not allow parents to sit in on classes. We have found this distracting to the students. Parents also tend to correct their children during the creative process, the studio needs to be a safe space for them to create. If your child is still a toddler (Age 4 – 6), you can sit with them for 5-10 mins just to get them to relax, but after that, we kindly request that you slip out of the class and allow them to progress on their own.
