Worksheet 1: Determine your top 5 values

This one has been the most life-changing of all the exercises I have done concerning Personal Development and self-discovery. Your values drive absolutely everything you do. It is a set of priorities that you live your life by. Your values determine every single behaviour and action and ultimately dictate your destiny. In order to understand yourself and art better you must determine your values.

Tell me what your values are, and I’ll tell you where you are heading

Dr John Demartini

Tell me what you pay attention to, and I will tell you who you are.

José Ortega y Gasset

It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.

Roy Disney

In this article, I will help you clarify your values. Being conscious about what drives you is the first step to conscious living. Only once you know your true identity can you live in alignment with your values.

Your values form a solid base for you to operate from and make decisions. Without your foundation, a.k.a your values, your life falls apart. You lose your passion, drive and direction. If you do not identify and understand your core values, you may violate them without being fully aware of them.  You might look successful on the outside but feel lost on the inside. You might make decisions to please others and stay in relationships that do not fully align with your true identity.

Researchers confirm that when people have a clear set of core values:

  • It’s easier to make big life decisions.
  • It’s easier to achieve long-term career goals.
  • It’s easier to develop lasting relationships and meaningful friendships.
  • It’s easier to focus and reach a flow state when studying or working.

Doesn’t that just sound amazing? So let’s begin by looking at what drives you and what truly matters to you. It’s a process, and you might need support by discussing these questions with a close friend or family member.

The list of values and questions you are about to dive into is adapted from Be True: Discover Your Core Value System as well as the Demartini Value Determination Questionaire.

I stumbled upon these sources by seeing an executive coach and psychologist, Ilze Alberts. She introduced me to the maverick, Dr John Demartini. At first, I wasn’t taken with Dr Demartini. He had a weird outdated hairstyle and used American marketing strategies. He seemed part of the toxic, extreme self-help culture filled with fake gurus with whom I do not wish to associate myself. However, I misjudged him.

With an open heart and clear mind, I can now direct you to his website for the determination of values online process. It’s private. It’s free. Available here: https://drdemartini.com/values/start

Aligning your actions with your values.

In these worksheets, I will not only help you determine your values. But I will also demonstrate how to align your actions with your values. When your values and your actions are aligned, you are living with integrity. You become energised, driven and passionate. When challenges arrive, you can quickly discern why these obstacles drain you. Usually, it is because one of your core values is under attack.

Here is my summarised value determination process, abbreviated for printable worksheets.
